Soccer Cleats

Soccer cleats are essential to the way a modern soccer game is played. Players must be able to speed up, stop, and turn at a moment’s notice. With normal shoes, even on dry grass, that’s an impossible task. The treads just don’t offer a firm enough platform to work from. And without the proper base, a tower surely falls.

Soccer cleats are different from a tread because they actually pierce the turf to give the wearer a grip. They are plastic spikes that are part of the sole of the shoe. According to regulations, the spikes must be plastic, and not metal. This is done for the safety of the players. Slide tackling is a common occurrence in games.

In a slide tackle, the player slides at the ball with toes pointed. However, if the toe is lifted, this exposes the sole of the shoe to your opponent, which can then cause significant damage to their lower calves and shins. This is also why soccer players wear shin guards. However, even shin guards and ejection for a spikes-up slide tackle wouldn’t be enough protection if soccer cleats were made of metal rather than plastic.
