Soccer Shoes

Soccer shoes are an essential part of competition play. What may surprise you is how little they are used in many areas of the world. In nearly any developing country you’re likely to find a mass of children playing soccer barefoot in a dirt field. They can’t imagine the expense of outfitting their children with shoes that they will simply outgrow within a year’s time.

Soccer shoes are more formally known as cleats. That naming is due to the small spikes that adorn the tread. These spikes enhance the traction on the field. They must be plastic, rather than metal, and metal clip on cleats are also prohibited. This is for player safety. Plastic is more than hard enough to injure a player on the receiving end of a slide tackle, metal could very well maim them.

Soccer shoes, or cleats, allow a player much greater mobility. They give them the ability to firmly plant and change direction on a single foot, rather than shifting course over the arc of several running strides. This mobility is essential to the game. The shifting, darting motions are all possible thanks to the firm platform afforded by the players’ shoes.
