What are the dimensions of a regulation field?

The regulation soccer field is 100 yards long by 60 yards wide. It is bisected by the midfield line, at the center of which is placed the midfield circle. At either end there is a 44 yard wide, 18 foot deep penalty box, with a 20 by 6 yard goal box within it. At the back of the goal box is placed the goal, which is 24 feet wide by 8 feet tall.

Where did soccer originate?

Soccer is descended from ancient kicking games that go back to possibly the 3rd century BC. Ancient China has the first records of a game of skill that involved kicking a round ball, but the game did not resemble modern soccer. The game as it is played today originated in England, although similar games sprung up in other parts of Europe around the same time.

What’s necessary to play the game?

A field, a ball, and 22 people (split into two teams of 11) are required to play soccer. Each team has 10 field positions plus 1 goal keeper. The goal keepers are the only ones allowed to touch the ball with their hands on the field of play. The goal is traditionally a frame backed by a net, but neither the frame nor net is necessary, as long as the dimensions are clearly marked. Equipment wise a player needs a jersey, cleats, shin guards, and socks long enough to cover the shin guards.
