Soccer Uniforms
Soccer uniforms, like many sports uniforms serve two purposes in the modern sport. Firstly, they are used for team identification. The team name, their logo, and colors all show up on the uniform. The uniforms also make telling home and away teams easy. Light colored jerseys are for the home team, and dark colored jerseys are for the away team.
The second purpose behind soccer uniforms is a bit less ideologically pure than the first. They serve as a highly visible platform for advertising. A team’s uniforms are rarely paid for by the team, rather a sponsor will absorb the cost of the uniforms in order to utilize them as an advertisement. The message is fairly clear: these highly trained and successful individuals support our company, if you use our product you can be like them.
Like it or hate it, nearly every sport is an advertising platform. It says something when anything from a race car, to a courtside table, to a soccer uniform is seen as an advertising opportunity. In our consumer culture a company has to have its name and logo plastered everywhere just to keep up with the pack.
